The benefits of reading books

We are living in an instant- era where time is money and where there is no time to sit back and relax with a genuine good book that would keep you on the edge of your seat and you cannot put it down.  Everything is provided to us in condensed format – DVD’s, the Internet, eBooks, e-commerce, e-news and you name it, it is there for our convenience. Or is it? Isn’t it to our downfall?

Whatever the case may be, sometimes you have to stop and smell the roses and what better way than with a good book; whether it is fiction or non-fiction. We have to read; we must read!

The benefits are uncountable but here are just some few to entice you to start reading or to take up reading again:

1.       It is a tranquil form of leisure-time activity.

2.       It is one of the best methods to develop your language efficiency.

3.       Your memory capability are sharpened or exercised as you have to keep track what already happened in the book so far or to keep track of the various character developments and plot-development.

4.       Reading sharpens your concentration and focus abilities.

5.       It develops your creativity as you have to picture the scenarios or scenes in your mind’s eye.

6.       Books develop your people skills as books are one of the Medias where characters are developed comprehensively by the author.

7.       A good storyline or theme stimulates personal development and enriches lives.

8.       With books you can still chose a quality book. Book publishing has become such a cut-throat industry that authors cannot afford sub-standard books and are forced to do much and quality research to ensure quality and thus sufficient readers. Now-a-days books for leisure also in a sense educate us.

9.       Reading is also (still) an affordable leisure time activity.

It seems that with the dawn of the Internet  era a couple of decades ago that the world-wide-web was taking over our lives but fortunately for some hard-case authors and publishers they took back what belonged to them – readers that still love and enjoy a good book!

I have been a writer of sorts all my life, mostly in Scientific and Engineering Journals. But now that I am retired and no longer under the gun to meet publication dates, I find it absolutely wonderful to write at my own pace on whatever pops into my head !!!

Well spoken. I have actually just started a couple of books and will be proofreading another for a friend before he publishes it. Reading is one of my favorite recreational activities.

I didn't break the code on reading until I was 11. Prior to that mom had to force me to read. Once I unlocked the wonder of books she had to take them away. Between reading and audiobooks I consume at least 24 books a year and that is the minimum. Life without books would be like life without water to me. I agree with everything you have said. The one thing I wish you had mentioned is libraries. There are still there and they are still free. Reading is effectively free entertainment and Hollywood can't beat the special effects in my head. Period.
